Dean McCandless | Captain Dean McCandless Joining up in 1941 he was commissioned as an Officer with the 82nd Airborne Division. Serving with the 1st Battalion, 505th PIR, he made the first of four combat jumps on 9th July 1943 at Sicily during Operation Husky, and two months later jumped at Salerno. His third drop was on D-Day, landing just outside Sainte-Mere-Eglise where his unit fought successfully to capture the bridge over the Merderet River - he was the battalion communications officer. His fourth and final jump was during Operation Market Garden before moving on to fight in the Battle of the Bulge where he was wounded. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart. After leaving the service in 1946 he was later called up to serve with the Medical Corps as a doctor in Korea. |
