Pipe-Major Reith and Corporal-Piper Retih of the London Scottish (1896)

Every Londoner and every visitor to London knows the famous London Scottish, the 7th Middlesex Rifle Volunteers, one of the regiments raised in July, 1859, at the time of the "Invasion scare" of that year.  They were first raised among the "Scottish residents in London and its neighbourhood", and are still mainly recruited from the original source.  The commanding officer of the regiment is Colonel Eustace Balfour, a brother of the First Lord of the Treasury, and the corps muster between nine hundred and a thousand of all ranks, men of physique, bearing and soldierly qualities that are the admiration of all who have been brought into contact with them.  Their uniform is grey with blue facings.

Sergeant Lowe Conducting Observations From A Cottage Between The Opposing Lines Under Heavy Fire.

Sergeant Lowe Conducting Observations From A Cottage Between The Opposing Lines Under Heavy Fire.

When volunteers were called for to blow up a small cottage between the opposing lines near Givenchy one day in November 1915, Sergeant Norman McGregor Lowe, of the London Scottish, crawled out with two comrades to undertake the dangerous task. On approaching the cottage by a sunken track they found it strewn with bodies, showing that fierce hand-to-hand fighting had taken place. After satisfying himself that the enemy were clear of the cottage, Sergeant Lowe crept to the head of the communication trench which ran past the building to the German lines. He then signalled back that all was clear, and the Engineer officer crept up to the house and laid his wires in readiness for the explosion. The party then retired, and for his conspicuous gallantry Sergeant Lowe was subsequently awarded the D.C.M.

The London Scottish in the Great War.

The London Scottish in the Great War.

Mark Lloyd.

For two centuries the officers and men of the London Scottish have faithfully served their country, never more so than during the terrible years of the Great War. Initially with the 1st Guards Brigade, and later with the 56th (London) Division, the 1st Battalion was so committed to the prosecution of its cause that by November 1918 its numbers included only three survivors of the original Battle of Messines. The 2nd Battalion saw action in campaigns as diverse as France and Flanders, Ireland, the Balkans and Palestine where it won two Victoria Crosses. The London Scottish in the Great War does not set out to recite the oft-told famous battles fought and won. Rather it employs a wealth of previously unpublished war journals, diaries and photographs to provide a unique insight into this most auspicious Regiment. It demonstrates as no history of the London Scottish has before the hopes sufferings and aspirations of the volunteers who filled its ranks, so many of who ma.........
