About all editions : Personal notes on this painting from the artist : Having done a couple of Barkmann paintings in the past and I thought it would be interesting to illustrate something from his earlier career, namely his first tank command during the third battle of Kharkov. I don't have any details on his specific tank other than it was a Panzer III, but given the 'Das Reich' Division employed a variety of this type at the time I have shown him in a winter camouflaged Pz.IIIL. I also discovered that during the battles the Soviets employed anything they could find, even obsolete lend lease tanks such as the Matilda or Valentine. I thought this was the perfect opportunity to show such an unusual abandoned vehicle in the background.
