Photographs of the 6th Bombay Cavalry, during the reign of Queen Victoria.

"Jacob's Horse" (1896)

The 6th Bombay Cavalry are the famous "Jacob's Horse" , being so named after the founder and first commandant of the regiment, the famous Brigadier John Jacob, the brilliant Irregular Cavalry leader and military organizer of forty years ago, whom Sir Charles Napier called "the Seidlitz of the Sind Army".  It was raised in 1846, and has had a splendid fighting career, in token of which it bears as appointments in record of its war services the names "Cutchee", "Meanee", "Hyderabad", "Punjab". "Mooltan", "Goojerat", "Afghanistan 1879-80".  The uniform of the regiment is dark green - the colour adopted for all the seven regiments of Bombay Cavalry - with primrose facings, dark blue check loongee, and primrose throat plume.  "Jacob's Horse", which numbers some 600 sowars, is at present stationed at the city founded by their great chief, Jacobabad in Sind.
