History of 1 squadron Royal Air Force. Initially a Airship Company In 1912.  During The First world war. No. 1 squadron equipped with reconnaissance aircraft went to France in 1915. But became a fighter squadron in 1917. After the war No. 1squadion was disbanded in January 1920. But reformed on the 21st January 1921 In India, later that year being stationed In Iraq. until November when the squadron was again disbanded. 

Formed again in February 1027 as a fighter squadron at Tangmere. The Squadron Participated in the  battle of Britain, flying Hurricanes.  the squadron was equipped with Typhoons in 1942,and In 1944 equipped with spitfire IX's. In 1946 the squadron was equipped with the Jet Fighter the meteor.

After the war the squadron was equipped with various aircraft. In 1955 equipped with Hunters,  and In July 1969 was equipped with the harrier and became the first Squadorn to be operational with V/STOL aircraft.
