The Commandant of the 18th Bengal Lancers. (1896)

Lieut-Col G L R Richardson, C.I.E., the Commandant of the 18th Bengal Lancers, is one of the best known of our Indian cavalry officers.  He was the officer who, in 1893, was selected to command the representatives of Indian Cavalry sent over to England to escort the Queen at the opening of the Imperial Institute.  The 18th Bengal Lancers were first raised in 1858, at the time of the Mutiny, as the 2nd Mahratta Horse.  They did good service in 1879 in the Afghan War.  Their uniform is scarlet with blue facings.
